I am a musicologist and media composer based at the University of Leeds. I hold the positions of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Arts and Humanities Research Institute and Teaching Fellow in Film Music in the School of Music.

My research and teaching explores music in the contemporary media industries. I hold particular interests in television and streaming, library (or ‘production’ music), screen-music production processes, and media composition. My research publications include peer-reviewed journal articles in Music and the Moving Image, Critical Studies in Television, and the European Journal of American Culture. My article “Soundtracking the City Break: Library Music in Travel Television” won the 2023 BAFTSS Publication Award for Best Essay by a Doctoral Student.

I am active within the TV industry as a media composer: my music has recently featured in the Emmy Award-winning series United Shades of America (CNN), the Grierson Award-nominated documentary Subnormal: A British Scandal (BBC One) and an international advertising campaign for Honey. I am a composer-member of BAFTA as part of their Connect scheme.

BBC Radio interview

I was interviewed on BBC Radio Jersey about my work composing and researching media music. We discussed how I got into the industry, the process of composing for TV, and the impact of music in TV and film.

Research featured in Journal of Cinema and Media Studies

My article “‘How the Music was Made’: Television, Musicology and BBC Four” was featured in the latest "New Research" section of the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies (Fall 2023), on the topic of “Television Industries”. The article was originally published in Critical Studies in Television (2022).

New position: Teaching Fellow in Film Music
